Throughout the last year it has seemed as though all of the watch manufacturers have been competing to unleash the latest and greatest models in a complete black livery. This is the first article in a series that I am writing about black watches - which I find especially intriguing and sharp.

What can you expect from a collaboration between two luxury legends such as Blancpain and Lamborghini? The outcome is the first Lamborghini racing series where 30 glimmering Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 cars compete on six equally legendary race tracks. In celebration of this exceptional championship, Blancpain created a Super Trofeo flyblack chronograph, a resolute sporting watch with a limited production of 300 pieces. The black chronograph is manufactured in Le Brassus (Switzerland). It displays state-of-the-art design and possesses all the attributes of the cutting-edge technology akin to the indomitable engine of the Gallardo. The case, crafted in steel, is coated with a DLC (diamond-like carbon) treatment that makes the watch blacker than ruthenium. This color choice was inspired by the shiny profile of the Lamborghini. The sofisticated Blancpain Super Trofeo Chronograph is equipped with its own purring engine; the Calibre F185 constructed of 308 parts and endowed with 40 hours of reserve power. In order to fortify its dynamic nature, the movement has been coated by NAC – a state-of-the-art electroplating treatment that blackens the movement bridges and main plate.

For instant-measurement enthusiasts, the Calibre F185 drives a “flyback” function and the unmistakable black dial is characterized by two red and white 9 and 12 o’clock numerals stylised to summon the numbers painted on the 30 Lamborghini Gallardo. Last but not least, this exceptional model boasts other unique features such as its gold oscillating weight engraved with the inscription Super Trofeo 2009 and the strap in alcantara, just like the seats in the Gallardo. What more can I say?!?
