Living in a city where everyone wants something for nothing, friends are fair-weathered, and hype can overshadow talent--it’s hard to distinguish true gems from synthetic stones. Look no further for the real designer deal. There’s no shortage of talent in the Arulpragasam family. Lovers of music, art, and performance probably recognize the last name of artist/singer/songwriter/fashion designer M.I.A. Born Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, of Sri Lankan origin. Sister, Kali Arulgragasam, is no exception to the abundance of talent running in this family. One look at her thought provoking, exciting, humorous, forward, political art and jewelry pieces is enough to realize these siblings are super fertile with talent, point of view, perspective, and a unique “voice.” ![]() TOURISM (TERRORISM AFFECTS TOURISM) One of the most interesting collections of all the Super Fertile works is the summer 2008 “Tourism” set (Terrorism affects Tourism). “Tourism” is a collection dedicated to the countries that are affected by terror or war. The purpose of the Tourism pieces are to shine light on some of the most beautiful countries that are listed as “the most dangerous places to live.” Shedding light and a positive portryal of the women, children, culture, and life that has been forgotten by a material world. “Tourism” consists of various precious metals, die cut into specific country, rual, or cultural scenes. From women harvesting, to the moon and stars, to countrymen working. Each scene highlights a different forgotten place such as Sudan, Lebanon, and Colombia to name a few. As if the message behind the art wasn’t enough, Kali’s choice of women, styling, and art direction definitely sets her apart from most material girl jewelry designers today. So many artists claim Hip Hop, spirituality, revolution, rebellion, female empowerment, and politics only to fall short due to their hunger for the limelight, and their shallow obsession with the A-list. Miss Arulpragasam cuts through the smoke and mirror earrings, finger rings, and tiarras to make a statement. She knows her audience, and stays in tune with foreign and world affairs that truly matter in this current ecomomy and world climate. ![]() HUNGER Second runner up for best in show is the Spring 2009 “Hunger” collection. The purpose of “Hunger” was to raise awareness of the current world food crisis. In the process of crafting beads from precious metals and plating them in gold to have them resemble “staple foods.” “Hunger” symbolzies how vital staple foods are to starving countries. ![]() Staple foods are: Rice, Beans, Sweet Corn, Nuts, Black Bean, Lentil, Chick Pea, Wheat, Seeds ![]() “Hunger” communicates that everyone has a right to eat in the rising battle of food costs. Working with Oxfam, Super Fertile will be donating 7% of all proceeds from the “Hunger” collection to help with the cause. Every morsel is exceptionally hand crafted with precise workmanship and care. Again, Kali’s pick of models/people, overall aesthetic, and styling always offers a positive, and refreshing portrayal of men, women, and children. Nothing less than beautiful, natural, and tasteful is expected from Miss Kali Arulpragasam. ![]() THE REAL SUPERSTARS Last but never the least favorite, is “The Real Superstars” collection. “The Real Superstars” pokes fun at celebrity obsession and fascination by highlighting the top 10 inventors. Inventors and scientists chosen range from the inventors of the ATM card, water purifier, seat belt, to the brainiac of the “www” for websites. Kali immortalizes these genius stars by adding hand details to 3D brass and copper molds of their mugshots and faces. Bringing forth another profound yet obvious message about how important it is to keep using your brain in a time where movie stars and fame monsters are applauded vs. nerds. Kali makes point that it’s important to remember these incredible inventors and scientists that shape our daily lives in a substancial and fundamental way. Furthermore, the images created for the lookbook are off the meter and completely thought provoking. Someone is taking advantage of their freedom of expression, and someone is taking notice and applauding.
