Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens "What have you done my brother?" Guilty Pleasure

Is it possible to feel good and guilty at the same time about something that is actually quality? It is now. Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens will give you a good dose of funky gospel for that a**. Excuse me, I do mean derriere. The last thing I think of when I hear the word “gospel” is the El Michels Affair live instrumental 45’s. However, Noami’s record is like the angelic and faithful version of that with vocals (and its not Wu-Tang covers). These are super soulful tunes to soothe your church going spirit. I could be offending the Dap Kings right now with such a comparison, but I hope not, I mean it as a compliment. Even if you are not a regular at Sunday service, the music stands alone with its authentic sound and feel. Contrary to some of the newer indie soul 45’s being put out that are definitely good quality, but have the tendency to sound a little young (and perhaps even a bit contrived), Naomi brings heaven on earth. Tracks such as “What Is This,” in which she’s bubbling with excitement for her devout love and adoration of the man above. And “Trouble in My Way” which is a feel good, upbeat track that reminds you that life isn’t so tough after all. A trusty message that sometimes you just got to go the journey alone without the help of Moms and Pops comes from “Jordan River,” with support from the invisible, you’ll be alright. Ah, last but not least, for those sad times when you seem to have fallen down the “emo” wishing well of woes, “Lift My Burdens” comes through like a loyal saint. Listening to these queens is satisfaction guaranteed regardless if your prayers are being answered, or if “A Change Is Gonna Come.”
